Our English Curriculum

At Telford Junior School, we aim to motivate and enthuse all learners by providing a deep understanding of a range of text types, significant authors and the power of written and spoken language. We endeavour to help children develop an enjoyment and enthusiasm for English, by providing opportunities to learn and practise their skills in a range of ways and through thoughtful consideration of pairings and groupings. We challenge and support all children, through carefully planned sequences of lessons and high-quality engaging books, which are linked to other areas of the curriculum. Children learn to use and apply their reading and writing skills in other curriculum areas and in real-life situations.

Oracy at Telford Junior School.

At Telford Junior School, we understand that oracy – the ability to express thoughts, deepen understanding and engage with others through spoken language – is critical in the classroom for improving academic attainment, building confidence and fostering equity. We take a cross-curricular approach to oracy and ensure that all children are given a wide range of opportunities to progress their oracy skills across the curriculum. We regularly review oracy teaching and learning opportunities to ensure that children can progress and develop all four main areas of oracy skills, as laid out by Oracy Cambridge and Voice 21. These are the physical, linguistic, cognitive and social & emotional skills required to be an effective verbal communicator and are vital skills for children to master, if they are to achieve their full potential.
